Project overview
The Kogan Renewable Hydrogen Demonstration Plant is a hydrogen production facility that is being built at our Kogan Clean Energy Hub.
The project will include the co-location of a solar farm, battery, hydrogen electrolyser, hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen storage and outloading facility.
The demonstration plant’s hydrogen electrolyser will only be powered by behind-the-meter solar energy, making it one of the few truly renewable hydrogen projects in Australia.
The aim of the project is to produce renewable hydrogen and provide energy while gaining expertise from an operational hydrogen project from production, storage, transport and handling.
IHI Engineering Australia (a subsidiary of IHI Corporation Japan) is constructing the demonstration plant. Works began on site in mid 2023.
The Queensland Government is providing $28.9 million towards CS Energy's share of the project from their Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund.

Location
The project is being constructed on cleared land at Kogan Creek Power Station where we are creating clean energy hub. Our joint feasibility study with IHI Corporation Japan confirmed that this is a good location for the demonstration project with existing assets (including land and water) and plenty of space for potential expansion opportunities.
The demonstration plant’s water use is expected to be minimal. CS Energy will supply water from its existing bore water licences and current Kogan Creek Power Station operations demineralised water infrastructure.
How will the hydrogen be used?
CS Energy is planning an adjacent refueller network to facilitate decarbonisation opportunities in the heavy transport sector. Deployment of hydrogen refuelling is targeted for FY2025 and will support the Hydrogen Superhighway network that the Queensland Government is developing in conjunction with governments from New South Wales and Victoria.
CS Energy's proposed Brigalow Peaking Power Plant will initially source hydrogen from the Kogan Renewable Hydrogen Demonstration Plant. Production of renewable hydrogen for the power plant is expected to be scaled up through the development of a commercial scale hydrogen production facility as part of the Kogan Clean Energy Hub.
Local skills development opportunities
CS Energy has partnered with Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise on a hydrogen skills mapping exercise that will ensure that existing skills in the region (including within CS Energy’s workforce) can be utilised to support the growing hydrogen supply chain.
