Site works are well underway on a project that could help pave the way for the development of a green hydrogen industry in the Toowoomba and Surat Basin region.
CS Energy’s Kogan Renewable Hydrogen Demonstration Plant is one of a growing number of hydrogen projects across Queensland.
A solar field has been installed that will power the hydrogen plant with behind-the-meter renewable energy.
The civil works for the co-located hydrogen plant recently commenced and the project is targeting the first quarter of 2024 for commissioning.
IHI Engineering Australia (a subsidiary of IHI Corporation Japan) is constructing the demonstration plant.

Executive General Manager Future Energy Emma Roberts said the project offers multiple benefits because of hydrogen's ability to be used as both a fuel and as a way to store energy.
“Our aim is to produce renewable hydrogen and provide energy and other grid services while gaining expertise from an operational hydrogen project,” Ms Roberts said.
“It will provide valuable skills development opportunities for our employees as well as wider industry in the Western Downs through our partnership with Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise.”
The Kogan Renewable Hydrogen Demonstration Plant will include the co-location of a solar farm, battery, hydrogen electrolyser, hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen storage and outloading facility.

The Queensland Government is providing $28.9 million towards the project from the Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund.
The renewable hydrogen produced at the facility will have several applications:
